Chaber górski to okazała, kępiasta bylina o wyprostowanym pokroju i słabo rozgałęzionych pędach. Rozrasta się przez liczne kłącza. Liście szeroko-lancetowate, szaro-zielone. Bardzo ciekawa roślina o specyficznych, miododajnych kwiatach, zebranych w koszyczki średnicy 6 cm. Osadzone są one na wierzchołku sztywnych, owłosionych i gęsto ulistnionych pędów, osiągających wysokość 50 cm. Kwiaty brzeżne (znajdujące się na zewnętrznej stronie kwiatostanu) są koloru niebieskiego (u odmiany koloru białego), środkowe natomiast mają barwę fioletową do ciemnoróżowej. Kwitnie od maja do lipca. Roślinę należy przyciąć po przekwitnięciu, co spowoduje ponowne kwitnienie jesienią. Bylina nadaje się na rabaty, do obsadzania skarp, skrajów drzew lub krzewów. Wyśmienicie sprawdza się w ogrodach skalnych, jak również w ogrodach naturalistycznych. Kwiatostany, świetnie nadają się do cięcia. Centaurea montana najlepiej czuje się na stanowiskach słonecznych, suchych do umiarkowanie wilgotnych. Gatunek o małych wymaganiach uprawowych, dobrze rosnący na większości gleb ogrodowych. Nie toleruje nadmiaru wody ani zbyt ciężkiego podłoża.
